Is a south facing house good as per vastu?
Yes. A south facing house is one where the main door opens to the south, so you face south as you step out. That alone says nothing about whether the home works. Vastu gives each direction a job. The south holds heat and weight, which is why the rules place the heavier, more private rooms on that side.
The worry about south facing homes comes from one placement: a main door pushed into the south-west corner. That is a real thing to check. It is also one position on a long wall. A door in the right part of the same wall behaves very differently. So the question is not whether south facing is good, but where on the wall the door sits and where the rooms fall around it.
South facing plots and flats are common in Gurgaon and on the Dwarka Expressway, and plenty of families live in them without a second thought. What a check reads is the door position and the rooms around it.
Where should the main door be in a south facing house?
Divide the south wall into nine equal parts, from the south-east corner to the south-west corner. These parts are called padas. Counting from the south-east, the fourth pada is the preferred position for a south facing main door. The third is also workable. The parts nearest the south-west corner, the sixth to the ninth, are the ones to keep the door out of.
In plain terms, the door sits in the eastern half of the south wall, a little away from the corner, never in the western half. If the architect has drawn it in the exact centre, ask for a shift east by one pada. That is small at the drawing stage and hard after the slab is cast.
A few details help the door do its work. Make it the largest door in the house, opening inward and clockwise, with a level threshold and a clear path in front. Keep it lit. No toilet or staircase directly above it. Keep the compound gate in the same eastern half so the approach and the door agree.
For a flat, the same logic applies to the entrance wall of the unit, not to the tower. Our article on main door vastu for flat shows how to read that from the floor plan.
Which rooms go where in a south facing house?
The direction the house faces does not change the zone map. North-east stays light and open, south-west stays heavy and private, south-east holds fire, north-west holds air and movement. What changes is how the rooms fit around a door on the south wall:
| Room or element | Preferred zone | Also workable | Keep it out of |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main door | South wall, 4th pada from the south-east | 3rd pada from the south-east | The western third of the wall |
| Kitchen | South-east | North-west | North-east, south-west, the centre |
| Master bedroom | South-west | South | North-east |
| Children's bedroom | West | North-west, south | South-west (that is the elders' room) |
| Guest bedroom | North-west | West | South-west |
| Living room | North, east or north-east | West | Nothing in particular; keep it open |
| Toilets | North-west or west | South, away from the corner | North-east, south-west, the centre |
| Pooja room | North-east | East or north | Under a staircase, next to a toilet, inside a bedroom |
| Staircase | South, west or south-west | North-west | North-east, the centre |
| Brahmasthan (the centre) | Open and lit | Courtyard or living space | Toilet, kitchen, staircase, heavy column |
| Store and heavy furniture | South-west | South, west | North-east |
| Overhead water tank | South-west | West | North-east |
| Underground tank or borewell | North-east | North | South-west |
Two rows are worth reading twice. The master bedroom belongs in the south-west, the back corner on the west side of a south facing house. It is the quietest, most sheltered spot, so the head of the household sleeps there. The kitchen belongs in the south-east, the front corner on the east side, near the door. Families sometimes swap the two so the kitchen sits at the back. The zone map does not swap with them.
The bedroom and the bed
In the south-west master bedroom, place the bed so the head points south or east. Put the heaviest wardrobe against the south or west wall. Our article on bed direction as per vastu covers the rest of the room.
The kitchen and the stove
In the south-east kitchen, the cooking platform goes on the east or south-east side so the person cooking faces east. The sink sits away from the stove, on the north or north-east side of the room. If the kitchen ends up in the north-west, the same rule holds: cook facing east. See kitchen direction as per vastu for the layouts.
Toilets
Toilets and bathrooms go in the north-west or west. In a south facing house that is usually towards the back on the left as you enter. The one place to keep them out of is the north-east corner, which stays light and open. The toilet direction article has the corrections for a toilet already built there.
Pooja room and staircase
The pooja room or shelf sits in the north-east, placed so the person praying faces east or west. A staircase belongs in the south, west or south-west, climbing clockwise, and it stays out of the centre and the north-east. Both are covered in detail in pooja room vastu and staircase vastu.
What about the plot, the walls and the open space?
A south facing house is easier to get right when the plot helps. The rules of thumb:
- Keep more open space on the north and east sides of the plot than on the south and west.
- Let the ground slope, if it slopes at all, towards the north or east.
- Build the south and west compound walls a little taller and thicker than the north and east ones.
- Put more and larger windows on the north and east faces of the house.
- Keep the south-west corner of the plot the highest and the most built-up. A store, the overhead tank or the master bedroom sits well there.
- Keep the north-east corner the lowest and the most open: a lawn, a small water feature, or nothing at all.
None of these need a special plot. Every family decides where the driveway, the garden and the tank go. Deciding with the zone map in hand costs nothing extra.
What can be corrected in a south facing house?
Most of what we find in a south facing house can be corrected without breaking a wall. The order we work in:
- Fix what moves. Beds, the cooking platform, the pooja shelf, the heavy wardrobe, where the family sits. This is most of the work in most homes.
- Change how a room is used. A south-west room kept for guests becomes the master bedroom. A north-east room used as a store becomes the study or the pooja room.
- Adjust what can be adjusted. A door can often move one pada east within the same wall during a renovation. A toilet in the wrong zone can be closed off and a new one added when the plumbing is next opened.
- Leave the rest alone. A tower's orientation, the position of a lift core, a shared wall: these do not move, and vastu does not ask you to move them.
What we do not recommend as a first step: buying pyramids, yantras or crystals. They are not corrections. A compass reading and a marked-up floor plan are.
When should you get a proper check?
Before you buy, because the door position and the building's orientation cannot be changed later. Before you build, so the architect places the door and zones the rooms on the first drawing. And after you move in, if you want a room-by-room list of what to change.
If you are in Gurgaon, the home vastu audit is a site visit with a compass reading in every room. If you are elsewhere in India, or abroad, the online vastu consultation works from your floor plan and a video call. For a first pass on a plan you already have, the AI Vastu Check reads the entrance, kitchen and toilet zones, and the expert reviews it after.
Also worth reading: what vastu-compliant means. A south facing house can be fully compliant, and a north facing one can fall short inside. The direction is the start of the check, not the verdict.
