Staircase vastu

As per vastu, a staircase sits best in the south, west or south-west of the home, and should not take up the north-east or centre. Steps climb clockwise, in an odd number, with a solid wall behind them. If it is already built, light, colour, tidiness and what you keep below it are the corrections.

A staircase is the heaviest structure in most homes. It carries weight, takes floor area on two levels, and decides how people move through the house. Vastu treats it as a load, like a water tank or a store, and gives it a home in the heavy zones of the plan. This article covers the direction, the turn, the number of steps, the centre-of-house problem, and what to do in a duplex flat where the stairs came with the keys.

Which direction is best for a staircase?

The south, the west and the south-west corner. These are the zones vastu keeps heavy and high. A staircase there adds weight where the plan wants weight, and leaves the lighter north and east free for light, air and the rooms you sit in.

Within those zones, the usual guidance is that the stairs rise from east towards west, or from north towards south. You start on the lighter side and finish on the heavier side. In a compact plan this is not always possible. The zone matters more than the axis.

Two places are best left free. The north-east, which vastu keeps open, light and low, and the centre of the home, which has its own section below. The north-west is a middle case: not a first choice, but workable, especially if the space under it is a store rather than a room.

Clockwise or anticlockwise?

Clockwise. Stand at the bottom step and look up. If the flight turns to your right as you climb, it is clockwise. That is the direction vastu prefers, and the same one we recommend for a main door swing.

A straight flight with no turn has no clockwise or anticlockwise, and that is fine. An anticlockwise flight is a point to note when you are drawing a new house, because at that stage flipping the turn costs nothing. In a finished home it is not a reason to rebuild.

How many steps?

An odd number. The traditional guidance is that the total count of risers should be odd, so that you start and finish the climb on the same foot. Counts like 15, 17, 19 and 21 suit a standard floor-to-floor height. Count the risers, the vertical face of each step, from floor to floor across any landing.

If your staircase has an even count, change nothing. Adding or removing a step means rebuilding the flight, and the gain does not justify the work.

What should be under the stairs?

A store. The space under a staircase is low, dark and awkward, which is exactly what a storeroom wants. Shoes, suitcases, the vacuum cleaner and cleaning supplies all sit comfortably there. Three uses are best kept out:

  • A pooja space. The area under a flight has footfall overhead and little light. Vastu keeps the pooja in the north-east or at least in a clean, quiet corner. Our pooja room vastu article covers it.
  • A toilet. Older houses sometimes have one here because the plumbing was easy. It puts a wet area under a heavy structure, usually with no window. If it is already built, keep it dry, keep the door shut, and use it as a guest toilet.
  • A kitchen or a bed. A kitchen needs height and ventilation, and a bed under stairs means sleeping under footfall. A small pantry under the flight is fine as dry storage, not as a cooking space.

Staircase in the centre of the house

This is the layout we are asked about most. Many builder floors and villas put the staircase in the middle because it is the shortest route to every room. Vastu calls the centre the brahmasthan and wants it open, light and unloaded. A central staircase puts the heaviest structure on the point the plan wants clearest.

In practice it splits the house into two halves and creates a dark well through every floor. At the drawing stage, ask the architect to move the flight to the south, west or south-west and open the centre. This one change does more for the plan than any remedy bought later. A layout review at this stage costs far less than a correction after the slab is cast.

If the staircase is already in the centre, keep the stairwell open rather than boxed in, so light passes through. Use an open railing instead of a solid parapet. Paint the well and treads in light colours. Add a skylight or a large window at the top if the roof allows. Keep the floor at the base clear, with no shoe rack or cupboard, and store nothing under the flight.

What to do in a duplex flat

A duplex or penthouse on the Dwarka Expressway comes with the staircase where the developer put it, chosen for the structure of the tower. You cannot move it. In a flat the flight is usually short, straight or single-turn, and its effect on the plan is smaller than in a villa.

Take a compass reading at the centre of the lower floor and mark where the flight sits. In the south, west or south-west, there is nothing to do. In the north-east or the centre, apply the four steps in the callout: light, colour, tidiness and use.

Then look at what the staircase lands on upstairs. The top of the flight should not open straight into a bedroom or toilet door. If it does, a screen or simply keeping that door closed is enough. The master bedroom on the upper floor still belongs in the south-west of that level, wherever the stairs come up.

If you are choosing between two duplex units in the same tower, compare the staircase position before you sign; mirror-image units often differ. A pre-purchase check from the floor plan settles it before the token amount is paid.

External staircases

Builder floors in Gurgaon often share an external staircase, and independent houses may have an outside flight to the terrace. The same zones apply. South, west or south-west is where an outside staircase belongs. It should not run along the north-east face of the plot. For a terrace stair, keep the mumty, the small room at the top, towards the south-west of the roof. These are drawing-stage decisions and not worth altering once built.

Small details that help

  • A solid wall behind the flight. Stairs against an outer wall feel more settled than stairs floating in an open room.
  • No broken or uneven steps. A cracked tread is the one staircase fault worth fixing straight away, for safety before anything else.
  • Nothing stored on the steps. Shoes and boxes on treads make the flight feel narrower than it is.

How this fits the rest of the plan

The staircase is one piece. Its position only makes sense against the main door, the kitchen, the master bedroom and the toilets, because all of them compete for the same eight zones. A staircase in the south-west means the master bedroom needs another heavy spot, usually the south or the west. That trade-off is normal, and a compass reading and a scaled plan settle it. Our article on what vastu-compliant means explains how the zones fit together, and the guide to a south facing house shows where a staircase goes when the entrance is already on the heavy side.

To have the staircase read with the rest of the home, a home vastu audit in Gurgaon does it on site with a compass, and an online vastu consultation does it from your floor plan wherever you live. Either way you get a written note: what the staircase does, what to leave alone, and what to change.

Questions people ask

Which direction is best for a staircase as per vastu?

South, west or south-west. These are the heavy zones of the plan and a staircase adds weight where the layout wants it. Stairs that rise from east to west or north to south are the usual preference, but the zone matters more than the axis.

Can a staircase be in the north-east?

It is the position vastu most wants to keep free, because the north-east should stay open, low and bright. If the staircase is already there, keep the well light, use pale colours, store nothing under it and keep the corner clear. Rebuilding is not needed.

Should stairs go clockwise or anticlockwise?

Clockwise, turning to the right as you climb. A straight flight has no turn and is fine as it is. An anticlockwise flight in a finished home is a note for the record, not a reason to rebuild. At the drawing stage, flipping the turn costs nothing.

How many steps should a staircase have as per vastu?

An odd number of risers, counted from floor to floor across any landing. Counts like 15, 17, 19 or 21 are common for a standard floor height. If your flight has an even count, leave it. Changing the number means rebuilding the staircase.

What should be kept under the stairs as per vastu?

Storage. Shoes, suitcases and cleaning supplies suit the low, dark space under a flight. Keep a pooja space, a kitchen, a bed and, where you have the choice, a toilet out of it. If a toilet is already built there, keep it dry and use it as a guest toilet.
